Life story of John Winston Downs, 1966.

The first few chapters relate his family life and childhood, then he moves on to his military training and experiences during World War II. These experiences vary from his role as a navigator on a B-17 flight crew to his two year imprisonment in German prisoner of war camps. His stories of how he and other crew members and officers survived, kept themselves busy, and lived the day to day existence of prisoners of war are fascinatingly well detailed and recorded. He records their liberation at the hands of General Patton and his recovery back in the United States. In the last few chapters of the book he details his accomplishments and personal life as an officer in the Air Force after its creation from the Army Air Corps.
